Honda Self-Driving Cars Approved for On-the-Road Testing

factoryAdd Honda to the list of nearly a dozen automobile manufacturers who have been approved by the California Department of Motor Vehicles for testing autonomous vehicles on the road. Other companies on the list include Nissan, Volkswagen, and Tesla; until recently no one had been aware of the testing of Honda self-driving cars.

The company has apparently kept this secret well. After unveiling a prototypical Acura RLX concept last year with the sensors and computing power required of an autonomous vehicle, Honda has not said another word about its foray into the self-driving car segment. However, it reportedly has been testing these vehicles at a Honda testing facility in Concord, California, just north of San Francisco.

Just this year, the famous Google car logged 1.8 million miles, and the NHTSA and IIAS announced they were open to the possibility of requiring automatic braking systems in new cars in the future. Those benchmarks, in addition to the sheer amount of manufacturers testing electric autonomous cars, show that this may be where the future of the auto industry lies. Honda self-driving cars could be an excellent investment in coming years for the company.

This Year, Remember These Beach Safety Tips For Fun in the Sun

beachHeading to the beach this summer? There’s nothing more relaxing than the warm sun, cool breeze, and the rhythmic sound of the waves.

However, beaches do come with some inherent dangers, so it’s important to keep these beach safety tips in mind:

  • Always follow local beach rules, obey any posted signs, and listen to all lifeguards.
  • Never swim alone, and make sure that someone you know always has their eye on you.
  • Drink lots of fresh, clean water (not saltwater!) to stay hydrated, and be sure to frequently lather yourself with sunscreen.
  • Don’t leave your belongings unattended on a public beach where they could be moved or stolen.
  • Never, ever leave children unattended on the beach, especially in the water.
  • Take swimming lessons, not only ensuring your ability to swim but also so you may help others in danger.

Finding Events for Independence Day in Vallejo

Independence DayThis weekend marks the annual celebrations for Independence Day in Vallejo and our neighboring city, Benicia. Benicia will kick things off with the Torchlight Parade at 6:30pm on Friday, June 3rd and the Freedom Festival all day Saturday. The morning of July 4th, Vallejo will hold its 162nd annual parade followed by the Festival on the Waterfront, and the fireworks show will start at 9:15pm on the waterfront.

With events going on all day in both cities on July 4th, you can check out both festivals and keep your family entertained from the Stars and Stripes Forever Parade in the morning to the fireworks in the evening.

The Freedom Festival in Benicia will include music, arts/crafts, a climbing wall, train rides, and a bouncy house. Vallejo’s Red White and Blue Groove has a bit more for adults, like the artisan beer garden, a car show, and jazz performances, along with plenty of fun for kids.

At Avery Greene Honda, we’re excited to celebrate with our fellow citizens! We hope you’ll make it to these festivities.

Honda Takes Title of Bestselling Automaker in California

2015 Honda Accord

2015 Honda Accord

Time to downshift, Toyota Prius. After taking bestseller in California for the past three years, the hybrid has been pushed out. In 2014, the Honda Accord has taken the title of bestselling automaker in California. It was a close race and came down to the wire, with the Accord selling 71,578 units to the Prius’ 71,210 units. That’s not all. The Prius also faced fierce competition in another Honda model: the Civic.

Both the Accord and Prius come in four models. The Accord sells in coupe and sedan body styles with an additional hybrid model and plug-in hybrid version. The latter two sell in low volumes. The Prius consists of the Liftback, C subcompact, V wagon, and plug-in hybrid. With an aging design and an increasing number of hybrids and electric cars, it was only a matter of time.

Prius sales increased by only 2%. The Accord, however, rode the recovery wave and jumped 17.3% compared to 2013. Now that the Honda Accord has ousted the Prius for bestseller in California, what model will be next to overtake the Prius? The 13-time bestselling car in America, the Toyota Camry? The longtime favorite nameplate, the Toyota Corolla? We at Avery Greene Honda can’t wait to see these two Japanese automakers duke it out over California.

Honda Uni-Cub Makes Walking Obsolete

Honda has long been working on robotic balancing devices, think ASIMO, the walking Honda robot. Now, Honda has transferred some of that technology into a personal mobility device called the Honda Uni-Cub.

The Uni-Cub works along the same lines as a Segway, but instead of standing on a large device, you sit on it, like a stool. To control the movements, you simply lean in the direction you want to move and it responds accordingly.

We could see a device like this being great for workers who spend large parts of their days walking through large warehouses, or those with physical handicaps. A device like this could cut down on time spent walking letting them get more work done. And, it leaves your hands free, so you can check notes or make a phone call while you ride.

Check out this video to get an idea of how it works.

What do you think about the Uni-Cub? Will it be a useful device or something that will just make some people lazier?

Japanese Automakers Begin New Charging-Station Company

While some might say that the car industry is all about competition, this isn’t 100% true. Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and Mitsubishi are coming together, along with the Development Bank of Japan, to found Nippon Charge Service LLC, a new charging-station company in Japan.

Green Cars

Automakers have joined together to support a new car charging-station company.

The four Japanese carmakers helped the company get started by giving it 80 million yen, or $786,000 US. Nippon Charge Service LLC, which was establishes to promote plug-in vehicle charging installations across Japan, will help business owners incorporate charging stations at convenience stores, highway-side locales, and other locations to make it easier for plug-in vehicle drivers to charge their cars. The four automakers hope to triple the country’s current number of publicly accessible chargers to around 17,000 units.

While the chargers will exclusively charge plug-in vehicles from Honda, Toyota, Mitsubishi, and Nissan, Nippon Charge Service will follow in the footsteps of the EZ Charge system in the US, which uses a universally-accepted charging card to drivers who own these brands’ plug-ins. This will allow for the process to be significantly more seamless.

Honda Super Cub is Granted 3D Trademark

The Honda Super Cub, a small, affordable scooter, the all-time best-selling vehicle powered by an internal combustion engine, with over 60 million sold worldwide. According to Road and Track, the Japan Patent Office has now awarded the 56-year-old super scooter with a 3D, or Shape, trademark – making it the first ever to be granted to an automaker in Japan.

The Super Cub was sold in the U.S. under the nameplate “Passport” until 1983, and has been offered with a number of different engines, though its original design hasn’t changed much. The scooter has become so popular, that several companies outside of Japan make knock-offs. While the trademark may not do much to help stop the fakes, the trademark is a huge victory for Honda and its iconic scooter.

This raises the question, why don’t we have the Super Cub here in the U.S., and how can we get it back? We think the residents of Vallejo, CA, and other cities nationwide could put these things to good use!

In the meantime, you can check out a wide variety of new Honda cars, trucks and SUVs to get you from Point A to Point B right here at Avery Greene Honda! Our friendly staff is happy to help you find the car that’s right for you!
