Why You Should Get Your Car Ready for Spring

You know what they say—if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. But the truth is, even if your car doesn’t seem to be begging for help now, it might do well with a little extra care. Avery Greene Honda recommends that you get your car ready for spring so that it runs well and looks great all throughout the warmer seasons.

Get A Checkup

It’s important to get your oil changed every three months or so, and the beginning of spring is a great time to do it. This will also give your mechanic a chance to look over the rest of vehicle and to check things like brake fluids and wheel alignment, which may need some attention after a long, hard winter.

Clean the Exterior

Honda Ridgeline Spring Fishing - Vallejo, CAIf you have a busy schedule like most people, you know that it’s tempting to just hope that the rain will clean your car as much as it needs it. However, much of your car—and especially the undercarriage—may have built up road salt from the winter. This can ultimately cause corrosion and rusting if left on for too long. Use a power wash to clean underneath, and a soapy towel to scrub off grime.

Get New Wipers

April showers are no lie, and you’ll want to be prepared for them. Spring is a great time to get new wipers so that you’ll have the best possible visibility for safe driving when the rain starts to pour.

Spring Car Care Tips

The harsh winter weather can do a seriously number on your car, especially if it’s an older model. In order to get it into tip-top shape for spring, love and attention is all your car needs. Best of all, getting your car ready for the fast-coming warmer weather is easy. Here are a few quick spring car care tips from at Avery Greene Honda’s service department!

  1. under the hoodUnder the Hood – Winter is a harsh season and if you parked outside, it’s time to take a look under the hood. Make sure to check all of your belts and hoses for wear and cracks. Verify that your coolant isn’t too old to ensure your car won’t overheat. If you aren’t car-savvy, a dealership service department can check for you. Better safe than sorry!
  2. Wiper Blades – Ensuring your wiper blades can handle the spring rains should be a top priority. You never know when you’ll be driving through a storm, after all. Look at the blades for cracks and wear. Ice can do a number on your wiper blades so don’t skimp on new ones.
  3. Wash – Last, but not least, wash your car. Dirt, grime, and road salt can build up over winter and each can do damage to your paint if left unattended. A simple car wash will remove most of the residue and leave you with a sparkling car!

Tips for Trailering or Towing a Boat

lakeHere in Vallejo, where we sit right on the Napa River, summer is the perfect time to haul our boats to the shore and head out for a relaxing day on the water. Hitching your boat safely to your truck isn’t hard, but it’s good to know some tips for towing a boat to keep it safely fastened for the drive.

Number one, make sure the weight in the boat is balanced. You may have to move things around so that the weight in both sides is about the same and the weight in the front and back is about a 60/40 split. You also need to attach—at least to ratchet—straps from the trailer to the bow eye.

When backing out of the driveway, have someone stand behind you to guide you. Steer from the bottom of the wheel, turning the wheel the direction you want the trailer to go.

While driving, give yourself more time to stop than usual, and take wide turns. When going up or down hills, shift down a gear to make braking safer and help you climb it.

Spring Car Care Tips You Don’t Want to Skip

spring cleaningSpring is in the air, and with warmer temperatures comes an important reminder to make sure your car is up-to-date on all its maintenance. Ensure your car is ready to help you leave behind the long winter months with evening drives, weekend road trips, and sunny daily commutes.

Here is our spring car care checklist:

Get caught up on regular maintenance. Give us a call at Avery Greene Honda and we’ll make sure you’re all caught up on oil changes, filter replacements, and more.

Flush the radiator. Follow the instructions in your owner’s manual to correctly flush and refill the cooling system before the hot summer months set in.

Check the belts. Inspect the condition and tightness of belts. Cracks and obvious wear can be a sign of trouble to come.

Check the battery. Now is a good time to check the life of your battery, and make sure it’s holding a charge so that you don’t find yourself stuck with a car that won’t start.

Check the tires. Here in California, we’re doing the rain dance. Make sure you’re prepared just in case that call is answered with tires that provide optimal traction. Make sure they aren’t over-worn, over- or under-inflated, or misaligned.

Check the wiper blades. Consistent, direct sunlight can cause major damage to the rubber that clears water from your windshield. If you find that yours are warped or cracked, or just don’t clear the windshield like they should, replace them.

Wash and wax. If you’ve spent the winter months ignoring your car, now is the time to clean it out, wash it out, and shine it up.

Check the air conditioning. Have a trusted dealership or mechanic shop check your A/C for any issues before the sweltering summer months hit.
