June 7-16 marked this year’s Team Honda Week of Service, a week when Honda employees come together to make a difference in their communities. Every year, the volunteer event is held around Honda’s Founder’s Day in North America (June 11, 1959). This year marked the 60th anniversary of Founder’s Day.

More than 25,000 volunteers with Honda corporate offices, factories, dealerships, and suppliers came together to offer their time and labor via nearly 600 service activities. These activities included pet adoption events, home repairs for people in need, food and blood drives, park and beach clean-ups, and more. Together, volunteers made an impact in 42 states, plus Mexico and Canada.

“Honda’s Week of Service continues to grow and we are grateful to our associates and to those who join us in giving back to the communities where we work and live during this special week,” remarked Jeffrey Smith, vice president, Honda North America, Inc. “Team Honda has become a powerful force for good, demonstrating that by working together we can truly build nurturing communities.”

A Patriotic Past: Looking at the American History of Honda

American History of Honda | Vallejo, CA

Honda might be a Japanese carmaker, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t have very, very deep roots in America. With the Fourth of July still fresh in our rearview mirror, let’s delve into the American history of Honda, seeing how the brand become established in this North American market.

Honda first came to America in 1970, introducing the N600 as its first-ever American-sold vehicle. In 1979, this Japanese carmaker made history by opening its first motorcycle plant on U.S. soil, hiring 55 Americans and 11 Japanese workers to begin this endeavor. The plant eventually expanded into a car plant in 1982.

Located in Marysville, Ohio, this Honda manufacturing plant was just the beginning. Since it was created, the plant has seen Marysville increase its population from 7,000 people in 1980 to more than 24,000 people in 2019. Honda has over 15,000 employees and more than 134 suppliers across Ohio. It was also the first Japanese carmaker to build engines and transmissions in the U.S., along with being the first to export U.S.-built cars to overseas markets.

Now, Honda has 12 manufacturing plants across the United States. It opened a new, state-of-the-art facility in Marysville in 2016 to help build the only supercar produced in America, and has exported 1.3 million automobiles from the United States since 1987. What this means in practical terms: the chances are good that the stylish new vehicle you’re considering at Avery Greene Honda was made right here in the U.S.A.

This suite, which is standard on the Passport, helps increase the driver’s awareness of his or her surroundings with technologies like Collision Mitigation Braking System™ (CMBS™), a Road Departure Mitigation System (RDM), Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), and a Lane Keeping Assist System (LKAS).

This technology also comes standard on the 2019 Accord, Clarity series, Insight, Pilot, and Civic.*** Over 85 percent of all new Honda vehicles sold in 2019 have had the Honda Sensing® suite. Honda has sold over 2.1 million vehicles equipped with this technology since its introduction in 2015.

Explained: What Torque Means and How it Compares to Horsepower

auto gearWhen you are looking at the specifications of a vehicle, you are bound to see many numbers and figures, some of which you might not understand. One technical detail that tends to confuse tons of drivers is torque.

If a vehicle produces 300 lb-ft of torque, what exactly does that mean? And how is it different than horsepower?

The term torque describes your car’s ability to accelerate, in layman’s terms. If a vehicle has higher torque, it can accelerate quickly. For example, if a car accelerates from zero to 60 mph in four seconds, it has better torque than a vehicle that requires six seconds to perform the same task.

And while torque is related to horsepower, they are not the same thing. In fact, horsepower is determined by combining a vehicle’s torque with its engine abilities. So really, horsepower is just one, simple number that is easier to swallow than the finer details, creating an easy way to communicate how powerful a car is.

If you are still confused or would like to know more about what torque means in detail, feel free to contact us or visit Avery Greene Honda, where we want you to understand exactly how your car works.
