Three Events To Enjoy This Father’s Day Weekend in Vallejo

Father with son

Looking to plan an exciting Father’s Day Weekend in Vallejo? Any of these three events would be an amazing way to enjoy the weekend while celebrating all the dads out there.

Family Day at the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum

On the third Saturday of every month, which conveniently coincides with Father’s Day Weekend, the Vallejo Naval & Historical Museum offers free admission all day long. It’s a simple, affordable way to beat the heat while checking out this stunning museum, especially for those interested in naval history.

The Northern California Pirate Festival

Each year, pirate enthusiasts and fans gather in Northern California for the annual Pirate Festival and this year, you can check it out for Father’s Day Weekend. The event includes family-friendly activities earlier in the day, like fencing lessons, followed by an “18 and over” Buccaneers Bash in the evening.

29th Annual Juneteenth Celebration

Finally, Father’s Day Weekend also takes place during the yearly Juneteenth Celebration, which is being celebrated on June 17 from 11am to 4pm this year. There will be multiple vendors, snacks, and games to enjoy. Pack up the family and learn about history while having fun!

Not to mention, while you’re in town, consider paying us a visit at Avery Greene Honda, where you could wrap up your Father’s Day Weekend with a brand new car!

Spring Car Care Tips

The harsh winter weather can do a seriously number on your car, especially if it’s an older model. In order to get it into tip-top shape for spring, love and attention is all your car needs. Best of all, getting your car ready for the fast-coming warmer weather is easy. Here are a few quick spring car care tips from at Avery Greene Honda’s service department!

  1. under the hoodUnder the Hood – Winter is a harsh season and if you parked outside, it’s time to take a look under the hood. Make sure to check all of your belts and hoses for wear and cracks. Verify that your coolant isn’t too old to ensure your car won’t overheat. If you aren’t car-savvy, a dealership service department can check for you. Better safe than sorry!
  2. Wiper Blades – Ensuring your wiper blades can handle the spring rains should be a top priority. You never know when you’ll be driving through a storm, after all. Look at the blades for cracks and wear. Ice can do a number on your wiper blades so don’t skimp on new ones.
  3. Wash – Last, but not least, wash your car. Dirt, grime, and road salt can build up over winter and each can do damage to your paint if left unattended. A simple car wash will remove most of the residue and leave you with a sparkling car!

The Two Types of Sunscreen and How They Work

beachWe all know it’s important to wear sunscreen, protecting our delicate skin from the sun’s harmful UVA and UVB rays–in turn, protecting us from painful burns, early aging, and even skin cancer.

However, few know the actual differences between the two types of sunscreen: physical and chemical. One of these types might be far more efficient for you depending on your lifestyle, so it’s important to know the difference.

In general, physical sunscreens protect your skin by either blocking or completely deflecting the sun’s rays. This type of sunscreen is effective the moment you apply it, and stays effective until removed from your skin via sweating, swimming, or washing it off.

On the other hand, chemical sunscreens absorb the sun’s rays. These sunscreens become effective about 20 minutes after they are applied, and stop working after a certain amount of time and must be re-applied for functionality.

With either type of sunscreen–even physical–it’s important to re-apply the product every two hours or so, just to be safe. You’ll be glad you did!

This Year, Remember These Beach Safety Tips For Fun in the Sun

beachHeading to the beach this summer? There’s nothing more relaxing than the warm sun, cool breeze, and the rhythmic sound of the waves.

However, beaches do come with some inherent dangers, so it’s important to keep these beach safety tips in mind:

  • Always follow local beach rules, obey any posted signs, and listen to all lifeguards.
  • Never swim alone, and make sure that someone you know always has their eye on you.
  • Drink lots of fresh, clean water (not saltwater!) to stay hydrated, and be sure to frequently lather yourself with sunscreen.
  • Don’t leave your belongings unattended on a public beach where they could be moved or stolen.
  • Never, ever leave children unattended on the beach, especially in the water.
  • Take swimming lessons, not only ensuring your ability to swim but also so you may help others in danger.

Tips for Trailering or Towing a Boat

lakeHere in Vallejo, where we sit right on the Napa River, summer is the perfect time to haul our boats to the shore and head out for a relaxing day on the water. Hitching your boat safely to your truck isn’t hard, but it’s good to know some tips for towing a boat to keep it safely fastened for the drive.

Number one, make sure the weight in the boat is balanced. You may have to move things around so that the weight in both sides is about the same and the weight in the front and back is about a 60/40 split. You also need to attach—at least to ratchet—straps from the trailer to the bow eye.

When backing out of the driveway, have someone stand behind you to guide you. Steer from the bottom of the wheel, turning the wheel the direction you want the trailer to go.

While driving, give yourself more time to stop than usual, and take wide turns. When going up or down hills, shift down a gear to make braking safer and help you climb it.

Finding Events for Independence Day in Vallejo

Independence DayThis weekend marks the annual celebrations for Independence Day in Vallejo and our neighboring city, Benicia. Benicia will kick things off with the Torchlight Parade at 6:30pm on Friday, June 3rd and the Freedom Festival all day Saturday. The morning of July 4th, Vallejo will hold its 162nd annual parade followed by the Festival on the Waterfront, and the fireworks show will start at 9:15pm on the waterfront.

With events going on all day in both cities on July 4th, you can check out both festivals and keep your family entertained from the Stars and Stripes Forever Parade in the morning to the fireworks in the evening.

The Freedom Festival in Benicia will include music, arts/crafts, a climbing wall, train rides, and a bouncy house. Vallejo’s Red White and Blue Groove has a bit more for adults, like the artisan beer garden, a car show, and jazz performances, along with plenty of fun for kids.

At Avery Greene Honda, we’re excited to celebrate with our fellow citizens! We hope you’ll make it to these festivities.
