White – or its shiny cousin, silver – and black top the color list for 2012. White overtook silver last year as the most popular color.
According to the Associated Press, twenty-two percent of cars and trucks built for the 2012 model year are white, making it the most popular color worldwide. Silver is a close second, at 20 percent, followed by black, at 19 percent. Runners-up? Gray and (shocking!) red. The rankings are supplied by automotive paint supplier PPG Industries Inc., a Pittsburgh-based company that provides paints to a number of OEMs.
Color preferences vary by geography, vehicle type, and industry. More red vehicles are purchased in North America, while black and gray are most popular in Europe. Also, pickup trucks are more likely to be white, because a high number of North American pickups are purchased by business or government agencies wishing to paint logos on them.
